PHYSICAL THERAPY

WHAT IS WOMEN’S HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Women are beautifully made.  Women’s Health is a specialization within the field of physical therapy designed to specifically treat those issues that affect women, which include issues related to pregnancy and the postpartum period, menopause, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and urogynecological disorders. We additionally are highly skilled at treating hip, pelvis, lower back, and musculoskeletal disorders related to overall women’s health and function. Pelvic physical therapy also focuses on restoring the health of the pelvic floor as it impacts bowel and bladder function.  Our physical therapists have extensive training in all of women’s health including pelvic floor dysfunction and internal assessment and treatment techniques.

Due to the sensitive nature of this work, we provide a safe, private environment for you to discuss your concerns with your physical therapist at your evaluation and in subsequent visits.  We use treatment methods including manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, stretching, soft tissue release, cupping, dry needling, biofeedback, and exercise including pilates-based and yoga-based methods.  Each treatment is designed with you as an individual in mind and thus each person’s treatment is different.  We will work as a team to help you achieve your highest possible level of function, as we are devoted to empower and support you in your healing journey.

DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling is a treatment technique used by specially trained physical therapists to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve movement. Using a very thin, sterile needle, the therapist gently targets tight or overactive muscles—also known as trigger points—to help the muscle relax and function more normally. No medication is injected during this treatment.

In pelvic health physical therapy, dry needling can be particularly helpful for addressing muscle dysfunction in areas that influence the pelvic floor, including the hips, abdomen, low back, and surrounding pelvic muscles. These areas often contribute to symptoms such as pelvic pain, postpartum discomfort, painful intercourse, tailbone pain, hip pain, and chronic low back tension. Dry needling may also be used in other areas of the body to address your specific symptoms.

Many patients experience improved mobility, decreased pain, and better muscle coordination following dry needling. This treatment is typically combined with other pelvic physical therapy techniques such as manual therapy, movement retraining, and individualized exercises to support lasting results.

Your therapist will discuss whether dry needling is appropriate for your condition and ensure you feel comfortable and informed before beginning treatment.
